Sustainable Fashion

Hello lovelies, welcome back to itsjustabbsxo! Todays post is talking about sustainable fashion, what it is and how you can do your part to become more sustainable and help the environment in any way you can.

Sustainable Fashion

So, what is sustainable fashion?

Sustainable fashion can be defined as clothing, shoes and accessories that are manufactured, marketed and used in the most sustainable manner possible, taking into account both environmental and socio-economic aspects. This implies continuous work to improve all stages of the product’s life cycle, from design, raw material production, manufacturing, transport, storage, marketing and final sale, to use, reuse, repair, remake and recycling of the product and its components.

So, why should you choose sustainable fashion?

Firstly, sustainable brands focus on quality; using different materials and finishes that are made to last, as well as this, they’re also being kind to the environment. Fast fashion isn’t made to last, the aim is to get you to keep repurchasing so really why would these companies want to make items that last if it means you’re not spending as much money? By choosing sustainable brands that provide quality, you aren’t buying as many items of clothing which means you’re not only saving but also helping the environment!

Buying more sustainably is not only better for the environment but also for the people. Fast fashion has kept the cost of clothing down but this has a price; it means low pay and awful working conditions in developing countries. By switching to new ethical brands, you are ensuring that the clothes you buy, haven’t been made in poor conditions or by people that are being taken advantage of.

Did you know that the fast fashion industry leaves behind a massive environment footprint? This is from the landfill impact, the power and water consumption, pesticides and insecticide used in growing cotton and the chemicals that are making their way into the water supply and affecting the health of those that work there. By choosing sustainable fashion, you are saying no to supporting the negative environmental impact that the fashion industry is causing, and then reduce your own environmental foot print.

Have you noticed that fast fashion has in turn made us believe what we should and shouldn’t wear? All the trends, the celebrities, magazines and instagram have created a way of making you believe that is what you should wear – even if you don’t feel it’s something you would necessary pick out.

Fast fashion is associated with large chemical pollution into the environment. The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, it falls just under the oil industry.

What now?

Okay, admittedly this is not going to be the easiest switch, it can take a while and you really need to take the time to find a way that works for you. A few ways you can start the switch to a general more sustainable life are as follows;

  • Shop at charity stores; you can find such good ‘steals’ in a charity shop, plus all shop profits go to that chosen charity.
  • Buy from local stores; support your local shops, the smaller brands that you usually wouldn’t go in have such amazing things in them!
  • Buy slightly more expensive items that are made to last; spending that little bit more is so beneficial in the long run, you are given products that last a lifetime and you can wear all year round.
